ABOUT Curtis:
I was born to be a performer. When I was younger, I was obsessed with microphones. I would take anything, even those hollow, plastic toy bowling pins, using them as a microphone, jumping up on any box or platform as a stage, dressing up to put on a show for anyone in need of entertainment. After getting involved in theatre, I developed a yearning to make a transition to the screen, to be in soap operas and cartoons, to be seen by a larger audience. That wasn’t what happened… exactly.
Eventually I had to make the decision that happens at the end of high school, the “what are you going to do with the rest of your life?” That decision. My parents were supportive of me enrolling in a theatre program, but they wanted the work I did to be steady, safe, and above all else, local. So after completing said degree, I naturally signed a 2-year contract to teach drama in Asia.
I was able to share what I know and love with people who were excited to participate, and learn from being immersed in a culture so completely different from my small town Canadian upbringing. With the most fulfilment I had ever felt, still able to dress up and put on a show, not to mention great opportunities to travel and see wonders of the world, I knew that this was who I was meant to become.
About those wonders of the world… One sunny day while I was on vacation on a magical tropical Island, I came down with a terrible illness. I was so sick and felt like I had never been closer to death. All I could do was lay in bed all day and stare out at the palm trees, losing the will to do anything. It was just so painful and all I could do was sleep. The doctor on the island told me to pump myself with water and electrolytes, and he hadn’t seen anything like this before… wasn’t sure what was wrong with me. That was when the current pandemic hit.
From that point on to who knew when, I was to teach school online in a shortened schedule; my commute was non-existent and time was of abundance. My creativity was tormenting me to be freed, as a result of this newfound reality, and the past inquiries that never stopped kept blooming… And I revisited that dream I had before I became who I thought I entirely was. To prepare myself to work in voice over, I read countless articles and books; listened to podcasts and more audiobooks than ever; I padded up my walk-in closet; I attended the webinars and received coaching; I threw myself into the deep end of social media; I narrated my first audiobooks and did character work in podcasts and other independent projects.
May the saga continue…
